Here are the highlights from my trolling sessions this week. All bike and social work related, obviously.
Bike Underground

Wow, underground bike paths? Who ever would have thought? Gensler, that’s who. The design firm has proposed a plan to convert the city’s abandoned tunnels into functional pedestrian paths. This would not only help ease congestion, but the people would also generate energy though walking and cycling. That is where they lost me. Meds For Drinking?

An interesting piece on an atypical treatment for alcoholism. Topamax, a drug typically used for migraines and epilepsy has shown to be effective in reducing problematic drinking. Topamax reduces the pleasant effects of the alcohol by eliminating excess dopamine. The medical model of alcoholism is rather new, but deserves attention. Check out the article by Professor Hanson for an in-depth description of this anti-drinking drug.
Van Gogh and Bikes, an Unlikely Pair

Daan Roosegaarde, of the Netherlands, has created a Starry Night themed bike path. There is not much more to it than that. I wish that this was a bit closer to NYC, but it isn’t. This looks like an incredible path to ride on. Reminds me of Rainbow Road from Mario Kart. Check out the full article above.
Bike and Brain 
Fascinating post. The underground bike paths in London sound really cool, but we here in Chicago already have some. Did you ever hear of Lower Wacker Drive? If you haven’t you likely saw it when you watched Christian Bale wheeling the Batmobile through it in the Batman movie. I ride on Lower Wacker when the weather is bad.

It’s a fascinating area. That’s where all the hotels and department stores have their loading docks. So, the downtown streets aren’t cluttered with semi trailer trucks.

Physical therapy helps in the restoration of strength, flexibility
and endurance for people who have experienced an injury.
They believe it may have something to do with restricting the flow of
blood which contains healthy nutrients. This makes the surgical
option a very expensive coin flip.
